Anyone still currently subscribing to a cable service knows how hard it is to deal with their customer service representatives. You spend hours on the phone trying to renegotiate your bill because the prices have gone up significantly without warning. When this happens to you, it’s about time to start looking for cheaper cable options. Switching from one cable provider to another is a hassle, especially if you don’t do it the right way. Some even have fees to proceed with your disconnection, something everyone wants to avoid.

Here are some tips you can use when you want to save money by switching cable providers and how to go along with the switch as painlessly and cheaply as possible.

Tip 1: Weigh The Costs

Before you decide to change cable service providers because the bills are getting too expensive for your budget, take a look at your contract first. Most service providers will include an early disconnection fee. Is it worth it to pay for those fees with the savings you will earn by switching? If it is, then go for it.

If the fees are too expensive you can try speaking to someone in authority to waive the fee, this is especially important if you have a good argument. People who had to go through several repairs during their subscription and other inconveniences can make the case that they are unsubscribing because of technical issue and should not pay the fee due to this.

Tip 2: Research On Other Companies

Before you pull the trigger and cancel your current subscription also do research about other service providers. Look into their rates, bundles, new customer promos, and most especially review from current and past customers. It is easy enough to find out the company’s ACSI scorecard rating. This will give you a clear picture of how easy or hard it is to deal with the company. If you don’t do your research you might just fall into the same traps you did with your current cable service provider that you want to avoid.

Tip 3: Check If You Can Install Equipment Yourself

Since you’ve already subscribed to cable in the past it is possible that your home is wired and ready for installment right away. Check your house and speak to the technical team of your new cable provider to see if you can do the set up yourself and avoid delays and waiting around for a team to do it. You can save money by doing this yourself and avoid all the hassle of having to wait around for the team to arrive.

Tip 4: Pay Attention to Bills

Once you’ve unsubscribed to an old company and gone through cheaper cable options and chosen the one you like best make sure that old bills do not keep arriving. If they do, contact your old cable provider and tell them you have canceled your subscription and the bills are no longer valid. Do this as soon as you can to avoid complications and possible fees.
